Fit

Side work that fits your day job

Longer note · updated October 2026

The side work that lasts is usually the side work that fits. Four quick checks help before you commit.

Skills

Start with something you already do reasonably well. Learning a new skill and finding clients at the same time is twice the work.

Hours

Can it happen entirely outside your working hours? Work that needs replies during the day can cause problems at your main job.

Contract

Read your employment contract for clauses about outside work, competing work or confidentiality. Ask HR if anything is unclear.

Energy

Notice what kind of tired your job makes you. Side work that uses different energy often fits better than more of the same.

All four

If one check fails, adjust the side work before starting rather than hoping it works out.
