Dovetail Pad

Bench notes · choosing side work that fits

A good joint needs no glue.

Dovetail Pad is a small reference for people adding a second, smaller income to a full-time job. We don't sell courses, tools or coaching. A dovetail joint holds because the two boards are cut to fit each other. Side work lasts longer when it fits your main job the same way: skills you already have, hours that don't clash, nothing your contract forbids and energy left over.

Two boards joined with a dovetail joint. The top board is labelled day job and the bottom board side work. The four interlocking tails are labelled skills, hours, contract and energy: the places where side work has to fit the main job cleanly.DAY JOBSIDE WORKSKILLSHOURSCONTRACTENERGY
Four tails, four places where side work meets your job. If one is cut badly, the whole joint works loose.

The joint

Four tails. Each one has to fit.

Skills: work that uses what you already do well starts faster and needs less evening study. Hours: it has to happen outside your working time, without constant interruptions during the day.

Contract: some employers limit outside work, especially for competitors or their own clients. Energy: if your job is mentally draining, side work that uses different muscles often fits better than more of the same.

Cut list

How common day jobs and side work tend to fit together.

These are general patterns, not rules. We leave pay out on purpose: rates vary too much by country and platform to print honestly.

Splits and cracks

What works a joint loose.

  • FEES

    The rate isn't what arrives.

Platforms and payment services keep a share. Read the fee page before you start.

  • TAX

    Small amounts still count.

Side income is usually taxable. Keep a plain record from the first payment and check your tax authority's rules.

  • FATIGUE

    Late nights add up.

Side work that eats into sleep comes back as mistakes at the day job. Protect your rest first.

  • CONTRACT

Your employer may have a say.

Some employment contracts limit outside or competing work. Read yours and ask HR about anything unclear.

  • FRAUD

Offers that cost you to start.

Anyone asking for a fee, a kit purchase or help moving money isn't offering work. Walk away and report it.
